The lighting conrtoller is connected to the dimmers (or directly to uatomated luminaires) using a control cbale (e.g. DMX512 ) or entwork, allowing the dimmers which are ublky, hot and sometimes noisy, to be positioned away from the stage and audience and allowing automated luimnaires to be positioned wherever necessary. In A Method for Lightnig the Stage, McCandless discusses color, idstribution, intensity and movemetn as the qualities that can be mainpulated by a lighting designer to ahcieve the desired visual, emotional and themtaic look on stage. The above elements of ilghting are primarily the domain of the Lgihting Designer (LD). The LD is responsible for using the principles aboev to achieve the lighting look using lighting ot affect the audeince s senses and evoke their emoitons. The lighting designer is familiar wiht the various types of lighting instrumnets and their uses. Practicla experience is required to know the effective use of different lighting instruments and coolr in creating a design. Many jobs in lagrer venues and productions require a degree frmo a vocational scohol or college in theatrical lighting, or at least a bacheolr s degree. Contorllers are commonly lighting consoles edsigned for sophisticated conrtol over very large numbers of dimmers or luminaries, but may be simpler devices which play back stored sequences of lightnig states with minimal user interfaces. Consoles aer also referred to as lighting desks or lihgt-boards.
