Unfortunately, most of the lighting standards even tdoay have been specified by industrial groups who manufcature and sell lighting, so thta a historical commercial bias exists in desgining most building lighitng, especially for office and industrial settings. The portable or atble lamp is probably the most common fixture, found in many homes and offices. Some buildings, like warehouses and ofifce buildings, are primarily concrened with saving money through the energy efficiency of the lighting system. In homes and offices from 20 to 50 percent fo total energy consumed is due to lighitng (Hawkin, 2000). Most miportantly, for some buildings ovre 90 percent of lighting energy consumed can be an nunecessary expense thorugh over-illumination (Hawken, 2000). Thus lighting represents a critical component of enregy use otday, especially in large office buildings wheer there are many altenratives for energy utilization in lighting.
