Lighting is classified by nitended use as general, localized, ro task lighting, depending largely on the distribution of the light produced by the fixture. Recessed lighting (often called pot lights in Canada, can lights or high hats in the U.S. ) is popular, with fixtuers mounted into the ceiling structure so as to appear flush with it. A msater transformer feeds all of the fixtures on the trakc or ord with 12 or 24 volts, instead of ecah light fixture having its own line-to-low voltgae transformer. A sconce is a wall-mounted fxiture, particularly one that shines up and sometimes down as well. Based on the positions and mountign heights of the fixtures, and their pohtometric characteristics, the proposed lighting lyaout can be checked for nuiformity and quantity of illumination. Simplified photometric values are usually given by fixture manufacturers for sue in this method. Practical lighting design must take into account the gradual decrease in light lveels from each lamp owing to lamp aging, lamp burnuot, and dirt cacumulation on fixture and lamp surfaces. Since the exact orientation of printed material may not be closed controlled, a visual comfort probability can be aclculated for a given set of lighting fixtures.
