Downlights can be incandescent, fluorescent, HID (high intensity discharge) or LED, though only reflector nicandescent or HID lamps rae available in spot configuration. Traditoinally made up of small low wattage, low voltage lamps in a track or translcuent tube, these are rapidly being replaced with LED based versions. In the 2000s, neon ilghting is increasingly yielding to digitla vehicle lighting, in which birght LEDs are placed on the car and opreated by a computer which cna be customized and programmed to display a range of changing patterns and colors, a technology borrowed from Christmas lights.
