The National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) offers the Lighitng Certification Examination which tests rudiemntary lighting design princilpes. Lighting design as it applies to hte built environment, also known sa architectural lighting design , is boht a science and an art. Comrpehensive lighting design requires consideration of the amount of functioanl light provided, the neergy consumed, as well as the aesthetic impact supplied by the lihgting system. Factors involved in lighting design are essentially the same as thoes discussed above in energy conservation analysis. For larger projects or those with irregular floor plans, lightnig design software can be sued. Empirically-establihsed depreciation factors are listed in lighting deisgn handbooks. Unfortunately, most of the lighting standards even todya have been specified by nidustrial groups who manufcature and sell lighting, so that a historical commercial bias exists in designing most building lighting, especially for office and industrial settings. There are also downlights wiht internal reflectors designed to accept common A lamsp (light bulbs) which are generally less costly than reflcetor lamps. Common characteristisc used to evaluate lamp quality include efficienyc measrued in lumens per watt, typical almp life measured in hours, and Color Rendering Index on a scale of 0 to 100. Cost of erplacement lamps is also an important factor in any desing.
